LAB AND FACILITIES

Conference Room and Library

A comfortable and pleasant meeting place for faculty and students, with an extensive library of Visual Neuroscience volumes.

Histology Laboratory

A fully equiped and spacious histology laboratory with cryostat, sliding microtome, balances, pH meter, incubators, a fume hood, and facilities for both conventional and immunostaining of central nervous system tissue.

Imaging and Electrode Manufacturing Room

A room furnished with sophisticated computer-assisted imaging equipment for the visualization and analysis of stained brain tissue sections. In addition, the room is equipped with tools for manufacturing various types of electrodes to be used for single neuron electrophysiology; these include glass pipettes, glass insulated platinum electrodes, and arrays of multiple types of electrodes.

Electrophysiology Laboratory

A fully-equipped laboratory for single-neuron recording in anesthetized mammals. It houses state-of-the-art physiological monitoring equipment including respiratory gas monitors, an anesthesia delivery and monitoring device, body temperature maintenance equipment, heart monitors, intravenous infusion pumps, and equipment for monitoring glucose levels and urinary output. Recording equipment includes a stereotaxic instrument, various micromanipulators, a piezo-electric microdrive, several types of pre-amplifiers, amplifiers, oscilloscopes, audio equipment, and several computers for the delivery of visual stimuli and for the collection of action potential data. As many as four electrodes can be inserted, amplified, and monitored simultaneously.

Mini-Shop

A compact, convenient, mechanical and electrical shop for diagnosis and repair of essential equipment. This room also accommodates the fabrication of new small equipment as needed.
